This Friday, the appeals court determined that two of those eight patents should not have been granted initially, and added that Samsung did not infringe on the third patent. Samsung was then awarded $158,400.
This sets a precedent that patent lawsuits may be dying down, and that companies should be more wary when filing patent lawsuits without much premise.
The judges also overturned a verdict that Samsung infringed on Apple's patents for software that automatically converts texts to links, like a phone number.
This is an overall, across-the-board loss for Apple and other tech giants who hope to make quick bucks by suing for intellectual property.

Hey Shaurya,
ReplyDeleteThat was a small yet interesting read. I thought you condensed the information really well and I found it to be nice summary of the verdict related to two major companies that was overturned. It was definitely intriguing. However, I almost felt like it was too short and I didn't have enough information/background on the case. I think your goal for this post was to provide a quick summary, but a little more background would have helped (the link to the original article aided that a little bit).
Another thing that I noticed was your last statement: you mentioned how it is a loss for Apple and other companies who hope to make quick bucks by suing intellectual property. I was wondering if you could expand on that a little bit- why would you think a giant like Apple would get into patent litigation (for which they must have paid millions of dollars as well) to make a quick buck? Do you think the costs weigh out the possible benefits? I think that's an interesting claim and I would like to know more.
Great post overall! Thanks :)

Hey Shauray,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading this article you wrote. It was the first one I opened, and I noticed that I had done the same case. It makes sense - this was two big companies with a lot to win or loss. I also touched upon the fact that Apple had lost two patents due to this case because the court ruled against the validity, in favor of Samsung. Although your words are concise, I wish you added more details on the patents and features of this case.
Hi Shauray,
ReplyDeleteI liked how you mentioned about the potential dangers of filing patent lawsuits, as you might end up incurring some losses even though you initially opened the case. It would have been nice if you mentioned more specifics about the case, such as which ideas/patents were actually infringed upon.
Hi Shauray,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed how you mentioned the general trend of patent lawsuits: I do agree that the Apple-Samsung trial sets a precedent that patent lawsuits may be dying down. It would have been nice if you mentioned the specific patents that were in question during the trial.
Great post overall!
